Recent research indicates that 2.4 million UK business leaders could fall behind due to inadequate AI adoption, posing an economic risk to the country. Findings published by Be the Business, a UK firm specialised in small business productivity, highlight this issue.

More than half of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) reported that AI currently plays no role in their operations, and nearly half have no plans to implement it within the next year. Although 36% of businesses use AI occasionally, a significant 52% have yet to begin its integration into their processes. 42% of SMEs have no plans to implement AI tools in the next year.

  • Cost concerns and data security issues emerged as primary barriers to AI adoption.
  • 21% of business leaders believe AI has no applicability to their operations.
  • Meanwhile, 18% claim no barriers exist for adopting such tools.

This group of business leaders, primarily aged over 55, managing smaller businesses outside London, are identified as a potential economic threat. Their hesitance could impede productivity and competitiveness, affecting staff retention and productivity in the UK’s already stagnating economy.

Be the Business says the current situation demands urgent action. They are urging the new government to foster nationwide productivity improvements and prevent economic jeopardy. Recommendations include government-led research initiatives to support SMEs, strategies to increase demand for AI solutions, and leveraging the UK’s AI technology leadership.

Anthony Impey MBE, CEO of Be the Business, stressed the importance of utilising AI's potential for enhancing the productivity of the nation's SMEs. With the right support and skills development, business leaders can overcome challenges to adopt AI tools seamlessly, taking full advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
