VIRTUS data centres advances sustainable infrastructure

VIRTUS Data Centres installs new transformers at its Wustermark Campus in Berlin-Brandenburg as part of its sustainable design initiatives.

VIRTUS Data Centres has completed the installation of two 185MVA super-grid transformers at its Wustermark Campus in Berlin/Brandenburg. The transformers, which are among the largest used in European data centres, are a key part of the campus development. They enable the site to connect at 380kV and support the planned implementation of a zero-generator operating model.

As part of the campus’s initial 300MW capacity, the transformers are central to a system designed for future expansion. Together with a dedicated 500MW substation and dual direct connections to the 50Hertz 380kV transmission network, the infrastructure is designed to provide power stability and resilience. Integration with the 50Hertz Wustermark substation and high-voltage connections further supports site resilience and uptime.

The 380kV network incorporates multiple renewable energy infeed points and can operate alongside standard diesel generator backup systems. The design also allows for operation without generators, which can reduce carbon emissions and costs compared with conventional configurations.

The facility, like all VIRTUS data centres, will operate using certified renewable energy sources. Its integration with regional renewable energy assets, including wind generation capacity, supports efforts to reduce fossil fuel use and contributes to wider European decarbonisation goals.

These oil-filled, high-voltage transformers provide several operational advantages, including increased resilience, improved electrical efficiency, stable power delivery for AI workloads, and reduced transmission losses. These factors can contribute to lower system usage charges and operating costs, particularly in an environment of rising energy prices.

The project represents an approach to data centre infrastructure designed to support large-scale AI workloads, reduce dependence on generators, and integrate with renewable energy systems.
