Turnitin has announced a new integration with Google Workspace for Education, bringing Turnitin Feedback Studio features into Google Classroom. The integration is intended to support educators in using AI in assessment processes while helping develop students’ AI literacy, critical thinking, and writing skills.
The update is available immediately and allows educators to access insights into students’ writing processes. The goal is to help ensure AI use in assignments is transparent and considered within academic workflows, with a focus on learning outcomes and grading consistency.
As AI tools become more widely used in education, student usage of generative AI in coursework has increased. A 2026 HEPI study reported that 94% of students use generative AI in assessed work. Turnitin has also reported that 15% of essay submissions contain at least 80% AI-generated content.
Within Google Classroom, instructors can enable Turnitin integrity checks on assignments, provide feedback, and grade work using Turnitin Feedback Studio. The integration also includes support for new assignment types, including the New Standard Assignment and Student Writing assignment, which provide a writing environment with AI chat controls and visibility into writing activity.
The system supports workflow continuity through features such as automatic grade transfer from Turnitin Feedback Studio back into Google Classroom and real-time syncing of student data. With a Turnitin Originality license, educators can also access AI writing detection indicators intended to support academic integrity monitoring.
A live demonstration of the integration was scheduled for ISTE 2026 in Orlando. The tool is described as being available more broadly following a closed beta phase, with access requiring a Google Workspace for Education Plus license.
Overall, the integration reflects ongoing development of tools designed to support assessment and writing instruction in environments where AI-assisted writing is increasingly common.
