The security implications of AI skills in organisations

AI skills provide operational benefits but introduce new risks, particularly in security-intensive environments like SOCs and MSSPs.

The rise of AI skills—executable knowledge artifacts that include both human-readable instructions and LLM-interpretable logic—introduces a new potential attack surface for organisations. As operational expertise, decision-making criteria, and automation workflows are encoded into AI skills, organisations may inadvertently create high-value intelligence targets. These skills contain information about organisational processes that could be exploited if accessed by adversaries.

Many organisations, including security operations centres (SOCs) and managed security service providers (MSSPs), are using AI automation to address gaps in staffing. While this can help mitigate shortages of skilled security personnel, it also introduces additional security considerations that require attention.

Security risks are particularly notable in SOC environments. If SOC skills are compromised, attackers could gain insights into alert triage logic, correlation rules, and incident response procedures. Such knowledge could enable adversaries to bypass detection mechanisms, alter severity classifications, or interfere with automated defensive responses.

Across sectors, AI skills present sector-specific vulnerabilities. The financial sector may face strategy theft or threshold manipulation; healthcare could be affected in relation to clinical protocols and patient data confidentiality; industrial sectors might encounter risks related to sabotage or R&D theft; the public sector could face manipulation of decision-critical data; and technology and media organisations may experience data exfiltration or reputational impacts.

Conventional security tools are generally designed to detect attack signatures in structured data. This approach may not identify malicious AI skills encoded in unstructured text, highlighting the need for tools capable of analysing the semantics of AI skill content.

Although AI skill adoption increased in 2025, many organisations still face challenges in integration. Issues such as rigid systems, limited functionality, and customisation constraints remain. AI skills can potentially address these challenges, enabling organisations to operationalise experimental AI capabilities at scale.

As AI adoption evolves, organisations need to consider both the operational potential and the security implications of AI skills. A careful approach is necessary to balance the benefits of AI-enabled automation with the risks introduced by these new knowledge artifacts.
