Nokia, a leader in telecommunications, has forged a strategic alliance with Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT), Latvia's foremost mobile operator, recognised for its pivotal role in defence technology. The objective of this collaboration is to seamlessly integrate Nokia's cutting-edge 5G radio technology into LMT's adept defence solutions, establishing a communications system that's built for capacity, security, and resilience.

Taking advantage of both companies' technological prowess, the partnership endeavours to craft a robust and adaptable solution. This ambition seeks to address the dynamic requirements of contemporary military missions as well as coalition forces. The new integrated system promises real-time data exchange capabilities amongst unmanned vehicles, cutting-edge sensors, and military personnel stationed on the ground. Such capabilities would significantly enhance situational awareness and secure interoperability, thereby reinforcing collective defence strategies.

LMT's President, Juris Binde, emphasised their longstanding camaraderie, highlighting, "This partnership builds on our longstanding collaboration and shared commitment to advancing 5G capabilities for defence. Together with Nokia, we are enhancing the security, resilience, and operational readiness of national and allied forces, ensuring mission success even in the most demanding environments."

Illustrating the potential of tactical defence systems to capitalise on the speed and minimal latency offered by 5G, Nokia's Head of Space and Defense, Giuseppe Targia, added, “Tactical defence systems harness the high speed, low latency, and robust connectivity of 5G networks to enhance real-time operations on the battlefield. Our joint solution with LMT supports the modernisation of military capabilities, enabling faster decision-making, seamless communication, and the integration of advanced technologies across tactical environments,” added Giuseppe Targia, Head of Space and Defense, Nokia.

This alliance builds upon the established collaboration between LMT and Nokia within Latvia's mobile networks. Their joint efforts have paved the way for the development of innovative 5G-driven military applications, fortifying defenses along the region's strategic eastern flank. A notable achievement of this partnership is Europe's inaugural 5G military test site at Ādaži base, a significant NATO hub in Latvia. By leveraging Nokia's technical acumen, they have rolled out pioneering innovations, such as the mobile 5G tactical network backed by Nokia's Banshee platform.
