Viettel is collaborating with renowned technology firm Ciena to enhance the service capacity of its optical network. By doing so, Viettel is paving the way to become a sought-after network partner for hyperscalers eager to delve into the Vietnamese market.

Ciena's 6500 Packet-Optical Platform, bolstered by its WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) 800G coherent optics, plays a pivotal role in this network upgrade. This partnership has supported Viettel's ambitious 5G expansion initiatives. As data-driven applications and services like cloud computing and artificial intelligence continue to rise, Viettel anticipates significant growth in both local and international traffic demand, prompting the choice of Ciena for its proficiency in Layer 0 control plane technology.

The programmability of the WL5e now allows Viettel's backbone to support extensive high-capacity 600 Gb/s wavelengths that traverse distances exceeding 1,000 kilometres. This strategic upgrade, implemented by Elcom, has augmented Viettel's backbone capacity by over six times, jumping from 4 Tb/s to 25.2 Tb/s. This leap in capacity has remarkably increased connectivity speeds while optimising space and power consumption. Viettel is also leveraging automated operations facilitated by Ciena’s Navigator Network Control Suite to efficiently manage the network's entire operational span.

In a recent achievement, Viettel reached a milestone by attaining 1.6 Tb/s through a singular optical channel using Ciena’s WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e). This trial achieved the doubling of Viettel’s current fibre wavelength capacity, suggesting WL6e as a viable upgrade to address surging bandwidth requirements. Through WL6e, Viettel envisions extending its portfolio to encompass ultra-high-speed 800GbE connectivity services.

Acknowledging the role of optical backbones, Wendy Le, Country Lead, Vietnam at Ciena, remarked on the importance of such advancements in maintaining Vietnam's fast-paced digital growth and optimising network efficiency in the AI-driven landscape.
