Open Compute Project Foundation strengthens with senior appointments

Dr. Zane Ball embarks on a new journey with OCP, bringing extensive industry knowledge to the forefront of open AI systems.

In an era where technological leadership is paramount, the Open Compute Project (OCP) takes a significant step forward by appointing Dr. Zane Ball as their Chief Technology Officer. Effective immediately, Dr. Ball embarks on his new role, armed with expertise that promises to fortify the organisation's position as the Premier Organisation for Open AI Systems.

“Zane brings a wealth of experience to OCP as we pursue our mission as the Premier Organization for Open AI Systems. Zane will be working across the entireOCP community as we facilitate development of open source hardware and standard building blocks for the most demanding Hyperscale, Neocloud, Colocation and Enterprise Data Centers worldwide”, stated George Tchaparian, ChiefExecutive Officer for the OCP Foundation. 

Dr. Ball, a prominent figure in the semiconductor industry, has nearly three decades of experience in developing silicon products and computing platforms. Previously a key executive at Intel Corporation, Dr. Ball excelled in shaping industry standards and enhancing interconnect technologies. Currently, he contributes his knowledge as a board member of Napatech A/S and as a strategic advisor to Astera Labs.

In his illustrious career, Dr. Ball led Intel's Datacenter and AI product management team and served as the Corporate Vice President of Datacenter Platform Engineering and Architecture. His team focused on the design and validation of Intel Xeon® data centre platforms, elevating customer and ecosystem enablement.

Dr. Ball's journey with Intel also saw him operating as the co-general manager of Intel’s silicon foundry business and holding various significant roles within the Client Computing Group.

Possessing a bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Rice University, he also boasts six patents in high-speed electrical design.

Joining Dr. Ball in advancing OCP's mission is Russ Wunderlich, appointed as Principal Hardware Engineer. Russ is renowned for his contributions as an electrical engineer, having spent over three decades designing intricate multi-processor servers, workstations, and laptops. His tenure at Intel witnessed his leadership in developing numerous generations of Intel® XEON® processors and platforms. Before that, he played a pivotal role at Compaq Computer Inc., designing MP server and mobile chipsets as well as server platforms.
