BAE Systems invests in UK AI start up Oxford Dynamics

BAE Systems strengthens its AI capabilities through strategic investment in Oxford Dynamics, enhancing UK defence innovation.

BAE Systems has invested in Oxford Dynamics, a pioneering deep-tech start-up based in the UK, to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics expertise. This collaboration forms part of BAE's commitment to exploring and integrating innovative technologies for swift deployment.

The partnership aims to merge BAE Systems' defence and security proficiency with Oxford Dynamics' AI-driven data expertise. Together, they will explore methods to provide next-generation advantages across all domains of modern warfare—air, land, sea, space, and cyber.

As an initial endeavour, Oxfordshire-based Oxford Dynamics will integrate its AI technology into BAE Systems' Prophesea platform. This digital tool aids defence organisations in maintaining the operational readiness of key assets, such as warships, armoured vehicles, and combat aircraft.

Andrea Thompson, Group Managing Director of BAE Systems’ Digital Intelligence business, said: “The landscape of warfare is rapidly evolving and embracing emerging technology is vital to keeping the UK safe. By working with companies such as Oxford Dynamics, we can help ensure that the nation is ready to unlock the advantages that innovation brings and help strengthen the UK’s sovereign defence and security landscape.”

Founded in 2020, Oxford Dynamics specialises in intelligent autonomous systems that analyse data and facilitate real-time decision-making. Its technology assists defence and security entities in enhancing mission planning and swift threat response with greater precision in complex settings.

Collaboration with BAE Systems aligns with the UK Government's Strategic Defence Review, which advocates for accelerated innovation and the development of sovereign capabilities. Dr. Edward Jackson of Oxford Dynamics acknowledges the unity in mission: "Our shared mission at Oxford Dynamics is to bring trusted AI to the front line…"

In the long term, this partnership will embed Oxford Dynamics' capabilities throughout BAE Systems' extensive operations. It promises to deliver AI-enabled real-time facilitation, granting UK and allied forces heightened decision-making support, operational autonomy, and enhanced resilience in challenging environments.

BAE Systems' equity stake in Oxford Dynamics will fuel the start-up's growth phase and contribute to the UK Government's ambition to reinforce the national defence industry, creating skilled jobs in the process.
