Leaseweb Global has officially become a member of Gaia-X AISBL, the European Association for Data and Cloud, which was founded in January 2021.

Gaia-X was a project initiated by market parties in the European Union to create federated secure data infrastructures jointly developed based on EU rules. Organizations involved in Gaia-X like Leaseweb, are committed to working together to design a next-generation sovereign European Cloud infrastructure, covering the needs of business and residents in Europe.

Leaseweb is engaged in the mission to design and roll out these new cloud infrastructures based on the Gaia-X principles and has delegated three senior executives with different skillsets to participate in key parts of the Gaia-X working groups. The Leaseweb team includes Robert van der Meulen, Leaseweb Global’s Director of Product Strategy and Jaqueline van de Werken, Leaseweb Global’s Group General Counsel responsible for Regulatory, Legal & Compliance, both supporting the Netherlands Hub of Gaia-X, and Marcus Busch, CEO of Leaseweb Deutschland as part of the DE-hub.

“As a EU-based global cloud hosting company with its headquarters in Amsterdam and data centers in 15 countries across the globe, Leaseweb praises its CISPE.cloud Membership (meaning we are a member of the Cloud Infrastructure Service Providers in Europe) to emphasize EU rules and EU law-based Codes of Conduct and Principle for the creation of new federated, secure data infrastructure services, retaining European data sovereignty for businesses and residents,” says Jacqueline van de Werken.

“The architecture of Gaia-X is based on the principle of common and open standards,” says Robert van der Meulen. “On a technical level, we help design an infrastructure based on openness, transparency and trust. The result will not be a cloud like the ones the world already knows, but an open system built on European values and rules.”

“The Gaia-X- initiative promises nothing less than the next generation of data infrastructure,” says Marcus Busch. “To create this open, transparent and secure digital ecosystem successfully, international representatives from business, science and politics need to work closely together. We are proud to be part of this historic effort.”
