Centrica and Ceres announce clean energy collaboration

Centrica and Ceres Power have announced a collaboration focused on developing on-site power solutions for industrial and commercial customers in the UK and Europe.

Centrica and Ceres Power Holdings have announced a collaboration aimed at accelerating the deployment of solid oxide on-site power solutions. The initiative responds to increasing demand for energy solutions alongside grid connection delays affecting commercial and industrial projects in the UK and Europe.

Through this collaboration, Centrica intends to offer customers high-efficiency, low-carbon, grid-independent power solutions. On-site generation of this kind can be deployed more quickly than traditional gas turbines or nuclear options, providing an alternative amid capacity constraints.

The collaboration brings together Centrica’s energy supply and trading services with Ceres’ Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) and Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC) technologies. This supports the deployment of high-efficiency, fuel-flexible power generation for sectors including data centres, AI compute hubs, logistics centres, and other commercial and industrial applications.

Ceres’ SOFC technology offers high electrical efficiency, quiet operation, and fuel flexibility, operating on natural gas currently, with potential future use of biogas and hydrogen. The technology is also suitable for carbon capture applications.

In the initial phase, Ceres will support Centrica in developing a service-led model for clean power. This will provide access to British technology supported by Ceres’ global manufacturing partners. Ceres will also assist with project origination, installation, commissioning, and lifecycle services, including predictive maintenance and end-of-life recycling.

Centrica is also exploring the integration of Ceres’ SOEC technology with its Advanced Modular Reactor programme to produce nuclear-enabled green hydrogen, as part of the UK’s broader clean energy strategy.

The partnership also builds on Centrica’s gas and power trading capabilities, offering customers a proposition that includes technology integration, structured energy contracts, cost certainty, and optimisation of on-site generation for flexibility within energy markets.
