Next-gen collaboration: enhancing Vodafone's cable network

HUBER+SUHNER and Aurora Networks collaborate to enhance Vodafone’s cable network with next-gen Remote PHY solutions and Distributed Access Architecture in Germany.

HUBER+SUHNER and Aurora Networks, part of Vistance Networks, are working together on a Remote PHY solution for Vodafone’s cable network in Germany. The project focuses on supporting multi-gigabit services, long-term network operation, and expansion.

The two companies are supporting Vodafone in deploying Distributed Access Architecture (DAA) and virtual CMTS technologies. DAA enables changes to cable networks by using existing Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) infrastructure and shifting some network processing closer to end users, which can affect network performance and reliability.

The approach is designed to support scalability, network upgrades, and migration from existing systems, while also influencing operational costs and service delivery.

Aurora Networks is providing its virtual CMTS (vCCAP Evo) and QAM video solutions as part of the deployment. These systems support functions such as provisioning, configuration, and monitoring of DAA devices through centralised control. Running on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) servers, they are also associated with changes in space, energy use, and cost at the headend.

At the same time, HUBER+SUHNER is supplying Remote PHY devices with software interoperability to support Vodafone’s network infrastructure.

The collaboration forms part of Vodafone’s ongoing development of its cable network in Germany, with a focus on network performance, capacity, and service delivery.
