Pioneering immersion cooling: Intel certifies BAC's innovation

BAC’s immersion cooling solution is now Intel-certified, demonstrating its application in efficient and sustainable data centre cooling.

Baltimore Aircoil Company has received Intel certification for its immersion cooling tank as part of the Intel Data Centre Certified Solution for Immersion Cooling. This certification applies to the latest Intel Xeon processors and underlines the growing importance of sustainable cooling solutions in modern data centres.

The certification results from an evaluation process involving immersion cooling tanks, cooling fluids, and IT hardware, undertaken collaboratively by BAC, Intel, ExxonMobil, Hypertec, and Micron. The cross-industry effort highlights the importance of partnerships in the advancement of high-performance cooling systems.

The certification includes the Xeon Processor Single-Phase Immersion Warranty Rider, providing guidance on the use and compatibility of immersion-cooled infrastructure. Extensive testing took place at Intel's facility in Hillsboro, Oregon, where BAC's immersion cooling tanks featuring the patented CorTex technology played an important role.

This technology was used to assess tank performance, reliability, and ensuring smooth integration with fluid and IT components. BAC's General Manager of Data Centres, noted, "Immersion cooling represents a critical advancement in data center thermal management."

Building on its existing leadership, BAC's COBALT immersion cooling system incorporates an indoor tank paired with an outdoor heat rejection system, enabling data centres to achieve among the industry's lowest Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) values. This enhancement hopes to improve both uptime and sustainability performance.

The certification by Intel reinforces BAC's commitment to advancing immersion cooling technologies and accelerates their adoption within the industry. Collaborative efforts aim to ensure all components, tank, fluid, processor, and memory, adhere to stringent standards of performance and reliability.
