Electricity distributor signs up to data centre partnership in ‘UK first’

UK Power Networks has become the first Distribution Network Operator in the UK to sign up as a strategic partner of the Data Centre Alliance (DCA).

The partnership is a significant step in supporting new data centres connect to the electricity grid, and will help the UK to cement its ambition to be a global destination for AI, cloud services and other cutting-edge computing applications.

It is part of a broader initiative to strengthen engagement with the data centre sector and showcase UK Power Networks’ leadership in connection services.

The partnership has seen UK Power Networks publish its newly-developed “Introduction to Connections” guide on the Data Centre Alliance’s member portal. This detailed resource is designed to help developers and operators of data centres better understand the many options they have when connecting to the grid. It helps ensure projects are delivered efficiently, safely, and with a level of flexibility that meets the customers' evolving needs for energy capacity over the course of a project.

To fulfil customers' connection needs, UK Power Networks offers a range of innovative solutions:

Non-Curtailable/Unconstrained Connections: Standard connections providing full capacity and 24/7 supply.

Ramped Connections: Flexible capacity increases over time, supporting phased growth and cost efficiency.

Flexible Connections: Non-firm connections managed in real time, enabling faster access ahead of network reinforcement.

Profiled Connections: Customisable capacity profiles to match operational patterns, ideal for data centres with variable and predictable loads, which can streamline connections ahead of network upgrades.

UK Power Networks’ Open Data Portal shows customers network equipment, capacity and utilisation, helping them make informed decisions and “right-size” their connections.

Customers also benefit from expert support, including pre-application guidance, “Ask the Expert” surgeries, and access to technical documentation and industry events, ensuring every project receives tailored advice and guidance.

Neil Madgwick, head of connections service delivery at UK Power Networks, said: “We’re proud to be the UK’s first electricity distributor to join the Data Centre Alliance as a strategic partner. This collaboration marks a major step forward in helping data centres connect to the grid quickly, efficiently and flexibly. Our new ‘Introduction to Connections’ guide and range of innovative connection solutions are designed to give developers and operators the clarity and support they need to deliver projects that meet the evolving demands of the sector. We’re committed to working closely with our customers and partners to ensure the UK remains at the forefront of digital infrastructure and innovation.”

Steve Hone, Chief Executive of the Data Centre Alliance, said: “This partnership shows how closer collaboration between the data centre sector and electricity distributors can accelerate the UK’s digital and net-zero ambitions. By sharing knowledge and practical guidance, we’re helping developers make informed, sustainable decisions and strengthen the skills base our industry depends on.”
