Vertiv, a global leader in critical digital infrastructure, recently announced its partnership with Digital Realty to provide next-generation infrastructure for ROM1, the latter's inaugural data centre in Italy. Positioned with a planned capacity exceeding 3 MW, this agreement not only strengthens existing ties but also expands the suite of Vertiv solutions across Europe, with notable operations in Paris, Madrid, and Amsterdam.
The ROM1 facility promises state-of-the-art cooling and power systems, catering especially to high-performance computing (HPC) setups. By capitalising on Rome's unique climate, the implementation includes pioneering free-cooling systems, while energy-efficient power management ensures robust support for high-density workloads.
Projected to commence operations in 2027, the facility's phased implementation marks its position as a carrier-neutral centre optimised for AI and machine learning applications. Strategically located, ROM1 serves as a conduit connecting Rome to major Mediterranean cities via fibre networks and submarine cables. By early 2026, connectivity expansion to Barcelona is underway, further solidifying the Mediterranean network.
According to Alessandro Talotta, managing director of Digital Realty in Italy, "Rome is emerging as a crucial gateway for digital infrastructure between Europe and the Mediterranean." This project aligns with the company's vision to create a strategic AI hub while setting groundbreaking benchmarks for energy efficiency in the HPC realm.
With the global rise of AI applications, the demand for sophisticated data centre infrastructure is evident, as mentioned by Karsten Winther, president for EMEA at Vertiv. "Our cooling and power solutions are built on decades of experience in supporting the most demanding applications," he confirms. Designed for scalability, these solutions assist customers in achieving their efficiency goals.
The technical innovations of ROM1 involve AI-ready cooling systems that adapt to diverse workloads and high-efficiency power distribution tailored for intensive computing. Intelligent environmental controls sync with real-time conditions, incorporating alternative energy sources to minimise energy consumption and ecological impact.
